Amer Delic is an American tennis who is most known for his powerful swings and his friendly demeanor. He turned pro in 2003, but was already working the professional tennis circuit the year before. Delic has several singles titles to his name. However, he has yet to win a grand slam singles title – something that he is fervently working on and aims to one day achieve.
Delic was born on June 1982 in Tuzla, one of the largest locales in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. He started playing at age 5, after his father had given him a tennis racquet. As ethnic conflict escalated in their region, Delic and his family decided to move for their own safety. The later on settled in Jacksonville, Florida in April of 1996, Delic was 13.
The move proved beneficial fro Delic’s tennis career. While attending school, a counselor noticed Delic’s interest in tennis. Delic was then referred to the school’s tennis coach, who was influential in helping Delic compete in his first tournament in the United States. At 13, he competed in a local tennis club’s tournament where he reached the finals, beating older and more experienced players along the way.
Delic attended the University of Illinois. While there, he played for school’s tennis team. He was instrumental in helping the University of Illinois Team win the NCAA title in 2003. He also won a singles title in the same tournament. Fellow teammates Rajeev Ram and Brian Wilson won a doubles title for the university.
Shortly after winning his NCAA singles title, Delic went home with his first professional singles title from the USTA Futures held in Peoria, Illinois. He also won his second USTA Futures title shortly after that. Since then, Delic has been competing in more prestigious tournaments including the ATP Masters and the Grand Slam tournaments. Other wins for Delic include 5 Challengers Singles title, 1 ATP Masters Series Singles title and 1 ATP tour singles title.
