Guillermo Coria is a magician.
At least his tennis fans, who often call him El Mago or Magician, seemed to think so.
The pro tennis player has been earning the name ever since he stepped foot on a court which was at an early age as his father wasted no time in teaching him how to play as he was barely walking when a racket was put in his hands.
He did not compete professionally until 2000 and has rarely looked back ever since with the exception of one minor setback in 2001 when he tested positive for Nandrolone fro which he was suspended three months. His suspension would have been longer but sources said the incident was an accident and he had only ingested the steroid accidentally.
Coria, named after tennis champion Guillermo Vilas, is considered a powerful player on the Association of Tennis Players (ATP) tour and most definitely part of the new generation of tennis superstars coming up.
In 2003 and the following two years after that, Coria finished among the top ten in tennis. He is considered to be one of the fastest ATP players in existence and proved that reputation when he reached the French Open Men's Singles Final. Although he was considered the favorite to win, he was defeated by Gaston Gaudio who did not suffer from leg cramps during the matches.
The clay court expert player competed in several matches from that tournament on but did not actually win another title until July 2005 when he played in his wife's native country. Croatia. The year was good for Coria's stats as he reached the fourth round or better in every Grand Slam.
Since suffering a shoulder injury, Coria's play has not been considered as strong so he has been working with tennis coach Horacio de la Pea to try and return to his glory days.
